![]() ![]() While not abandoning Ind圜ars entirely, he sought new challenges by turning to Formula 1 where he won his first Grand Prix, driving for Ferrari, in South Africa in 1971. In the early 1970’s, Ind圜ar racing became an all-oval track series, which did not appeal to the adventurous Andretti. Winner of the first Driver of the Year award in 1967, he topped this on its 25th anniversary in 1992 by being awarded the title Driver of the Quarter-Century – a feat few drivers are likely to emulate.Īndretti first achieved success in 1965 when he finished third in his first Indianapolis 500 and went on to win his initial Ind圜ar race and subsequently the championship, which he retained the following year. ![]() At the age of 53 he shows no desire to retire but is set for another season of Ind圜ar racing with the Newman-Haas team and new teammate, Nigel Mansell. Interestingly the Championship winner Big Al only won one race during the year in his March 85C.Mario Andretti has dedicated his life to motor racing. in the Doug Shierson/Domino's Pizza car who was victorious at Meadowlands and Cleveland, three seconds and three thirds in other races saw Little Al finish as runner-up in the Championship. Sadly however that was it for Mario with no more wins in the remaining eleven races just a single third place at Phoenix and he finished the season in fifth in the final standings. The 1985 PPG Indy Car World Series season started off in the best possible way with Mario Andretti in the Carl Haas/Beatrice T900 winning at Long Beach, taking second at the Indy 500 and winning again at Milwaukee and Portland. The new car was an evolution of the older car with a stiffer monocoque and revised aerodynamics to suit new regulations designed to reduce speeds on the super-speedways.įull technical details of the T900 design can be found in the Lola Press Release below. The 1990 T900 was was Lola's new Indy car design following on from the Championship winning T800 which had given Mario Andretti six race wins and teammate Danny Sullivan three. ![]()
